Aconitum 1907 antique botanical print Art Nouveau Isabel Adams ready-mounted Originalantique colour botanical print (from 1907) of various British wild Aconitums, Aquilegia, Delphinium, Larkspur, Monkshood. Custom mounted ready to frame. From a hand-lettered watercolour painted in somewhat Art Nouveau style by the prominent Birmingham Arts and Crafts artist-botanist, Harriet Isabel Adams. The picture is accurate and well-detailed, but also wonderfully fluid and naturalistic, creating a striking image with no whimsy. Adams shows the flowers, and also the leaves, seed heads, roots and seasonal stages of each plant. Great decor item for the shabby chic or country cottage look, or gift for a gardener. It's on classic, slightly satiny, thick bookplate stock and has been protected by a tissue guard. Isabel Adams ABOUT THE ARTIST: Harriet Isabel Adams (1863 - 1952) was an acclaimed English Arts and Crafts artist and botanist, and a Fellow of the Royal Linnaean Society of London. She took pride in the accuracy of her illustrations and text, and spent several years on this project, meticulously observing, describing and painting a huge range of British wildflowers. Her text was revised by the noted botanist, James Eustace Bagnall. The resulting pictures were stunning, both aesthetically and scientifically: highly detailed, and generally gorgeous, with gentle art nouveau colours and hand-lettered annotation. She drew and painted in a wonderfully fluid and naturalistic style, creating a striking image with no whimsy. We see the flowers, and also the leaves, seed heads, roots and seasonal stages of each plant. Adams trained at the Birmingham School of Art, which became the centre of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the UK. Contemporaries included such luminaries as Walter Crane and William Morris. As well as her botanical watercolours, Adams is also known for designing ex-libris bookplates, usually in an art nouveau style. GENERAL CONDITION NOTE: The prints in this series are over 100 years old, and there is the expected evidence of age, though it's minimal, and these lovely botanicals are generally in great shape. We aim to show condition clearly in our listing photos, and will always send more on request. Age-related issues MAY include toning especially at the page edges, foxing (rarely to the front, but more possibly to the reverse), ghosting from the tissue guards, waviness of the paper (most of which will go when the binding edge is trimmed), visible stitch holes and glue residue at the binding edge. As with most antique prints, these were originally bound into a book, rather than issued separately. Please note that we do not trim the binding edge of our prints, as buyers may prefer them intact.
