Minor edge wear, half inch closed tear at bottom edge of title page, prior owner's name stamped on front free endpaper, pages tanned, otherwise clean and tight. Description : 4.75" by 7.25", 259 pages (including eight pages of advertisements for publisher's other titles at rear).Green cloth-wrapped boards with gilt top edge of text block, gold-stamped lettering on spine. Lady Florence Dixie (1855-1905) -- née Lady Florence Douglas -- was undoubtedly one of the brighter offshoots from one of England's most deeply troubled families. (Her brother, the Ninth Marquess of Queensberry, is remembered to literary history as the man who brought down Oscar Wilde.) While never quite eschewing Imperialist ideology, Lady Florence was nonetheless a prominent early feminist who argued strongly for equality between the sexes , and went on to serve as a war correspondent during the first Boer war.
