Fantastic theatre scene Artist: The painting is signed with a monogram "E.B.". It is an early work of Emile Bernard (1868-1941), a well-listed French postimpressionist painter. He was noted for his friendships with such artists as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Odilon Redon, Paul Cézanne and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He moved to Paris in 1878. He entered Cormon's atelier in Paris in 1885, but was expelled in the spring of 1886. In 1886 he joined Gauguin in Pont-Aven, w he theorized a Cloisonnist style. They, along with other painters who joined them, became known as the School of Pont-Aven. Many of his paintings were inspired by religious or literary subjects, he was also influenced by the folk art of rural France and by the flat, decorative patterns of Japanese prints. In 1892 Bernard exhibited with The Nabis. Later he turned away from modern artistic experiments and began to study Byzantine art and other early European religious art. He toured Italy in 1894 and settled in Egypt for 10 years. Returning to France in 1904, he founded and edited the review La Rénovation Esthétique and published his correspondence with van Gogh, Gauguin, Redon, and Cézanne. Age: The painting is approx. from the 1880s. Medium: The painting is a genuine oil painting on board. Size without frame: The picture is 22 cm /inches high and 29 cm /inches wide. The frame itself is cm /inches wide. Auction record: A painting by Emile Bernard was sold at Christie's, New York on the 18th of November 1998 for $ 450,000. Description: you are offered an outstanding late 19th century oil painting of museum quality depicting a backstage theatre scene with a group of actors as characters in a play, in full costumes and makeup observing the play on the stage bathed in spotlight, seen in a fragmental view on the left, and awaiting their turn to enter the stage. This excellent scene of disillusion of art, revealing the backstage world of theatre has been rendered with excellent sense of composition, capturing the immediacy of the moment, nuanced handling of colour and atmospheric interplay between light and shadow. Condition: The painting is in a good condition but with slight surface grime, abrasions and light craquelure. The beautiful giltwood frame is in a fair condition but with cuts, scratches and wear to gilt.
