WHAT THIS IS-- World famous graffiti artist, Shepard Fairey, gave a talk and created a "Make Art Not War" mural for Santa Fe University of Art & Design in my hometown of Santa Fe, NM in February 2013. When he was finished creating the mural, there were several stencil prints and artists tools (spray cans and brushes) of his that were going to be destroyed. I rescued them (think--"Who the !@#$ is Jackson Pollock" where the lady rescues a Jackson Pollock from a yard sale) . These are six of the stencils from the work site mural pieced together like a puzzle into a stunning image of the woman's face! I had this entire piece spread out in my living room and my mouth hung open. This is one of the most gorgeous art pieces I've ever seen. This entire image is GIGANTIC ! When pieced together, all six stencils measure a COLOSSAL 104 in x 83 in! Each individual stencil print measures about 34.5 in x 42 in This means each stencil is larger than standard movie poster! (so picture six movie posters put together) I decided to keep all six stencils together as a set as it just didn't make sense to break it up when the entire image is so jaw-dropping when seen in it's entirety. (That said, there is one more piece--the "Obey" stencil--which is available in another auction of mine. It fits underneath the woman's jaw as shown in the last photo) . I'm a huge fan of Fairey's work so rescuing the pieces and owning them for awhile has been a pleasure. Fairey, along with street artist Banksy, is arguably the most important and most famous street graffiti artist in the world. Fairey created the world famous "Hope" image of Barack Obama featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 2008 . Fairey was prominently featured in the famous documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop." His "Obey" logo is recognized worldwide along with his "Obey" line of clothing. And his original artwork is currently for auction at the prestigious Sotheby's auction house. Among current, living artists, Fairey is a modern-day Picaso. It's possible these stencil prints may be a "backup" used on site during production since I believe the stencils become virtually destroyed during the creation of one of his murals (as they are cut, glued, taped, and spray-painted). So it's a lucky rescue. And it's beautiful to look at. If all six stencils were framed separately then hung close together--this entire piece would look extraordinary hanging in someone's living room (if you have walls big enough!) I don't know any other way a collector might obtain original Shepard Fairey stencil prints like this--particularly as a complete set like this-- unless you happen to know him personally. It's possible this may be the only such item ever auctioned like this on eBay! CONDITION Each of the stencils has a number (such as "B3") on the top front and marked twice on the back which obviously refers to the section of the mural each stencil belongs to. Each piece had been folded by the artist and his team into neat bundles in a large manila envelope (with the markings of the section of the mural they belong to)--so the sections have the creases from those folds. There also is minor dirt, minor footprints, and minor coffee stains (mostly visible on the back). As these stencils were part of an actual Shepard Fairey mural , and were outside on the concrete and in the wind while Fairey worked, so it doesn't surprise me that they have these type of real-world artist studio "imperfections" and embellishments. EYE APPEAL The overall Eye Appeal of the piece as a whole (in addition to any of the individual stencils) is jaw-dropping! You don't really notice the imperfections when looking the piece as a whole--what you notice is how STARK and VIVID the image is--and what a great artist Fairey is. It just rings of his authorship.
