AUTHENTICSAN ILDEFONSO PUEBLO BLACK-BLACK POT made by ADAM & SANTANA MARTINEZ. It is from the ESTATE of aNURSE who cared for ill Tribal members without payment, who in turn repaid her kindness with their HAND MADE NATIVE ARTS. This woman cared for and was beloved by her Native American Friends all her life. Her work took place on reservations in ARIZONA, NEW MEXICO, SOUTH DAKOTA and other tribal lands during the 1930s - 1950s. This is one of several pieces from her ESTATE all of which were carefully preserved and never used. ADAM was the son of MARIA MARTINEZ, the premier developer of San Ildefonso Tewa Black-on-Black pottery from the early 1900s. SANTANA was her daughter-in-law, who began decorating Maria's pots around the 1950s. The design is that of the Classic FEATHER, KNIFE - WING design. It is in NEAR MINT condition for its age, except for a small area of wear, scratch or rub mark, see photos. It measures 3 1/4" tall x 3 3/4" wide.
