For sale is an “Adlake Non-Sweating Lamp Chicago” according to the lettering pressed into the metal on the top. I know little about these lamps, but it appears to be a railroad lamp. As the photos show, it has a bracket designed to be slid into a slot, perhaps on a train, or on a signal. This lamp was given me years ago by an uncle who grew up on the Lakeview Section of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, at the south end of Washoe Valley above Carson City, Nevada. His father was foreman there. My uncle told me that the lamp was from the Virginia & Truckee, but this is called into question by the letters “SP” pressed into the metal on the shoulder of the lamp, which presumably stands for Southern Pacific. However, the two railroads met at Reno, at it is entirely possible that the V&T used Southern Pacific gear such as this. Please look at the photos carefully, as they are part of the description. As is apparent the lamp is rusty, but the rust is superficial and does not go deeply into the metal, which is sound. The lamp has seen extensive use and has various dents and repairs, shown in the photos. The body of the lamp is 14 inches tall (with the handle of the lamp standing up, 17 inches tall), 6.5 inches across at the base and weighs about 7.5 pounds. As shown, the top of the lamp is hinged, perhaps for insertion of a burner device inside. read more
