An excellent example of a commemorative earthenware jug issued shortly after Lord Nelson's death in 1805. The jug is thinly potted with a pearlware glaze and transfer-printed in puce with a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) under the lip with the inscription: 'ADMIRAL LORD NELSON / England expects every Man to do his Duty'. On one side of the jug is a list of the British Fleet in the order that they came into action, '33 British vessels with 2288 Guns Beat the Combined Fleet of France and Spain, consisting of 43 Sail and 2970 Guns, in which action 19 were taken and one blown up by the superior skill and bravery of British Tars'. On the other side is a map of the coast of Spain with the battle plan showing ships marked with numbers which refer to the list. 'BATTLE OFF TREFALGAR', 'With Refferences Gained by the British Fleet under Adm Ld Nelson over the Combined Fleet of France and Spain on the 21 of Octr 1805 in which action the intrepid Nelson fell covered with Glory and renown. Born Septr 29 1758 Died Oct 21 1805 Aged 48 years'. Laurel branches are shown below. Note: Nelson was 47 when he died, not 48! The transfer prints are in puce; the rim, foot rim and handle are decorated in brown. Height, ~6-inches, opening, ~3 1/2-inches and ~6-inches from the handle to the spout. In excellent condition overall, with just a small chip under the spout, a small crack at the base of the handle & a small spider crack which doesn't show inside . There are a few firing flaws and minor scratches (some under the glaze, as made). A similar jug by Wilson can be seen on the National Maritime Museum's website under their Nelson Exhibition (E5845).
