Offered for your consideration is an ADS model A2 integrated amplifier. This unit was built by Germany’s Braun for their U.S. partner, ADS (Analog & Digital Systems, Inc.). As you probably know, Braun started out as a radio manufacturer in the 1920's, and became well known for their post-war amplifiers with Telefunken tubes. Their relationship with ADS started in the 1970's with the high-quality speaker lines branded under both names. In 1967, Gillette acquired a controlling interest in Braun and gradually began to change the focus of their business. Production of Braun audio equipment stopped around 1995.

The A2 was made from 1982-1987 as part of Braun’s Atelier , or Designers' Studio, line and features a modern, timeless appearance (that was later followed by NAD and others in their product offerings). According to a German website I came across, only 21,000 A2's were produced in five years and the majority of them were labeled Braun. I normally don't characterize items as "rare", but this North American ADS version (available only from 1983-85) of the Braun model A2 appears to be. Please take a look at the photos I’ve taken of this very nice German integrated amplifier, and then I’ll tell you more about it. *Black is very difficult to photograph, so please pardon any flash reflections, window glare, etc.

As you can see, this A2 is in excellent condition. The steel and plastic case and faceplate are clean, all the lettering is crisp, and the knobs & button controls have a tight, positive feel. T are some small scuffs and use marks, consistent with sparing adult care, but no scratches, dents or anything like that. At the rear of the case is provision for a door to hide the input/output cables, but most owners took them off since they got in the way of quality audio cables. This unit does not have the rear door. Also, the faceplate door falls open on its own sometimes, but generally holds pretty well. Minor detractions aside, this integrated amp has a very nice appearance.

Aside from the outstanding design, this integrated amp performs very nicely (as you'd expect from a unit that cost around $650.00 in 1985 ). This is a later model with the CD input and boasts power of 80 watts per channel into an 8ohm load. It also has dual TAPE inputs/outputs, a PHONO input (with selector for "mm" or "mc" cartridge impedance), a TUNER input, and a VIDEO (AUX) input. In addition, t’s a PRE-OUT, MAIN-IN loop so advanced users can connect an EQ or powered subwoofer between the pre-amp/amp sections. I’ve been using it with a CD player and have noticed no static or issues on either the right or left channel, just nice clean strong sound. I haven’t tested the Phono or Tape inputs, as I don't currently own a turntable or cassette deck, but see no reason why they would not perform just as flawlessly. Also, if I read the specs correctly on the German website, the A2’s total harmonic distortion is rated at .08% (less than one tenth of one percent), and that’s a very respectable figure. Moreover, it measures a sleek 17½€ wide x 14” deep (not incl. the knobs) x 2¾€ tall. These amps were loaded with features and power to spare, with a design that was years ahead of the time. As such, this rare ADS/Braun A2 integrated amplifier, in excellent condition, is offered at a competitive price.
