A rare Advertising Cup Plate showing an American purveyor ofHousehold Furnishings. The cup plate most likely was made in the Staffordshire region of England in the late 19 th Century and advertises J. Wilson Brown, Nos. 47 & 49 Howard St. , Baltimore, Maryland . The little plate specifically mentions Crockery, Glass and Fancy Articles, and it has an ivy vine border in light blue, as well as a gilt rim. T is a VERY faint mark on the back: I can make out ‘B M & Co’ and it appears to be superimposed on a sunburst design; under the sunburst is the word ‘Quality’. I could not match this mark and not sure it will photograph, but if anyone knows more, please contact me and I will share it with the eBay community. The plate is 3 ½€ in diameter and in very fine condition. T are no cracks or lines. T is a small stone ping (it appears) on the underside (not visible from the top) and some glaze crackle, which would clean out nicely in peroxide, but I’m afraid the peroxide would remove the gilt edge so I will not try to clean it. American Advertising Cup Plates are uncommon. Most that you see are from English firms. J. Wilson Brown shows up in Baltimore Histories in the last quarter of the 19 th Century, but I was not able to find out exactly when they were in business. Buyer prepays, and postage in the US if free.
