ADVERTISING MAJOLICA BLACK AMERICANA CIGAR HOLDER WITH MATCH STRIKER

Rare piece measures approx. 7 1/2" across, 4 1/2" front to back and 6 3/4" tall to the top of the boy's hat. Probably made in Germany, no country of origin marked, just a series of numbers incised into the bisque like unglazed bottom which are "7391" over "24". On the back side bottom outside green glazed rim the numbers "7391" are also incised. At the feet of the boy is a pipe rest or ashtray which looks like a wooden bowl and says "COLUMBIA ALL" which I am not really sure if that is advertising some sort of tobacco or cigars. I would estimate that this was made sometime in the late 1800's, guaranteed not to be a reproduction.

The colors are very vibrant. The insides of the two barrel looking holders are a light turquoise glaze. The outsides of the containers look like cigars all around the perimeter. The larger holder to the left of the boy is for cigarettes or cigars. The holder to the right of the boy is for matches. The serated unglazed match striker surface is behind the smaller holder and measures 2 1/2" long and 1" tall. The boys face, hair and hands are cold painted. The cigar he is holding has a yellow glazed finish. The boy is wearing a pink shirt, green coat, purple pants, white stockings, red shoes, and a red hat with a blue and yellow feather in it.

The only damage to the piece are as follows: around the rim of the hat are about 8 small flea bite type glaze loss areas, the larger 4 measure about 1/8" the other 4 are very small , about the size of a straight pin head. T are also 5 chips around the rim of the bowl which says "COLUMBIA ALL" on it. One is 1/8", 3 are 1/4" and the largest one is 1/2". Only one of the chips is discolored and it also looks like t was another piece next to it the same size (1/4") which was glued back in or was a factory flaw. No other, cracks, chips or repairs.
