Aesthetic Ebonized Lacquer & Gilt Mirrored Buffet c1885 Our latest container recently arrived from the UK, and this item is from it. We have more extraordinary things that we'll be listing in the coming days and weeks, from the 17th century through the Georgian and Victorian periods to the Gothic Revival, Aesthetic, Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco Movements and later. Be SURE to check out our other auctions!!! This is another fabulous piece, and an unbelievably rare one, An Original and Genuine Antique English Victorian Aesthetic Movement Sideboard or Buffet, in Ebonized Mahogany, w/ Mirror Back, Fitted Drawer, Side Shelves, Shelved Cupboard & Gilt Painted Lacquer Door, Dating to c.1885..! It is a truly magnificent buffet or sideboard, see 6 pics above and 16 below. It came to me from the same source as a similar but larger James Shoolbred Aesthetic Movement sideboard that I will be listing separately. Of stylized demi-lune shape, it features stepped galleried & finialled rails above and flanking the central, original bevel-edged and shelved mirror back. Each side of the buffet has open shelved display areas with shaped corbels above forming faux arches, the corbels adorned with carved and gilded flowers. The shelves have shaped fronts, and the bottoms of the shelved display areas have galleried rails to reflect those on the mirror back. To the center is a hand-dovetailed drawer above the hinged, panelled cupboard door, that door replete with a gilt and handpainted lacquerwork panel in true Aesthetic style. The whole stands on turned front feet, and it is a wonderfully useful size, not too big to fit into even a humble-sized dining-room or foyer. All the hardware is original. It was clearly designed for dining-room use, the drawer being for flatware, the cupboard for linens including tablecloths and napkins, and the side display areas for table decorations. The overhanging top was to display trays of food, possibly hors d'oeuvres and/or civilized-size cucumber sandwiches..! Please remember that it is undoubtedly 120+ years old, and it is not perfect - it has some marks, surface dings and imperfections that need to be expected, and the left-hand internal drawer-side has had a piece of wood 'let in' at some time in the dim, distant past. The door has a lock but we have no key, but the door stays closed perfectly well despite that. It measures 45 1/2" wide by 15" deep by 49 1/2" to the top of the finialled galleried rails on the back. It has a solid wood (not plywood!) vertically-planked back, and is of the highest quality. It is a large and heavy piece, and we are unable to ship it ourselves. We are happy to supply quotes from a shipper known to us - all we will need are your city and zipcode. Shipping arrangements, including payment for shipping, will remain matters between buyer and shipper, though we will do all we can to assist. Alternatively, as always, BUYERS ARE WELCOME TO COLLECT AT NO COST This is a genuine antique Aestheic Movement buffet - Be SURE to check out our other auctions!!! 'The Yorkshireman Antiques & Collectibles' always has the esoteric and unusual English items we're renowned for. The one thing we DON'T have is reproduction. EVERYTHING we sell is original and genuine, as anyone who has ever bought from us knows very well. I am English, and my wife and I go to England regularly and buy EVERY item ourselves. We do NOT buy pre-loaded containers. Every item we offer has been found by us, haggled-over and bought by us, carried, wrapped and packed in a container by us and then shipped to the US by us. We control the quality of what we buy and we know the source of EVERY item we sell. Our particular interests lie in Arts and Crafts Mission items and Art Nouveau, though we have everything imaginable, from c.1600 to the 1930s. N.B. Please be aware that ALL the items we sell are at least vintage and often truly antique. Vintage and antique items HAVE flaws, e.g. scratches, marks and wear and ...
