Quite unusual, if not to say rare, Aesthetic Movement playing card holder with original silver score-keepers intact. This item dates probably from the late 1880's or early 1890's. The box container is in the form of a book with an album type of fastener. The cover of the box is a King of Spades playing card in relief. Within the box a stamped silver double-dialed scorekeeper covers the deck of cards. The two dials have lizzards as pointers to the numbers and the dials are set over a diagonal fan spread of playing cards. Surrounding the dials and cards are miniature poker chips, a key, and a pair of owls and other items. On the inside of the box cover a lyre-shaped holder secures a removable cellulose score card with grid lines and an attached scoring pencil. It seems like a miracle that all original pieces remain together. The deck of cards is older and each has a different Canadian scene. Because the blank side of the cards are decorated with a picture of a Canadian Pacific Hotel, Chateau Frontenac in Quebec, it is likely that the deck of cards is either from the hotel, or possibly from a Canadian Pacific train or ship. It is unknown whether the deck of cards is original to the box, but they are sufficiently old to be appropriate and were included when I acquired this set. The silverplate is original, slightly worn, but not in need read more
