AESTHETIC TRANSFER PLATE, KIOTO, W. GOLD LUSTRE, PINK AND ORANGE WITH A BLACK TRANSFER (E) This is a wonderful example of English Victorian Aesthetic transferware, with its border design of birds and flowers, center motif and Oriental influences. The border is decorated with flying and standing cranes, realistic apple blossoms and stylized chrysanthemums, cattails with leaves and geometric patterns. The inner rim is almost a basketweave pattern. The inset in the center shows a bird sitting on a branch, above a geometric wall. The rim of the inset is bordered by a repeat of the two different cartouches, and that again is bordered by a ring of apple blossoms. The background clay is cream. The inner and outer borders of the rim are a pale orange color, with an overlying silver luster. The birds and flowers are painted a pale orange, or a brick red, plus some brick red accents of geometric cartouches. The border of the plate is exciting and quite beautiful. The marks on the bottom indicate that the maker is B.G.&W., (for Bates Gildea & Walker) with an additional printed mark, LATE MAYERS. Their trademark potter image in a circle includes the markings, 1790, the pattern name KIOTO. An impressedmark 1 over 82, 2 impressed parallel lines and diamond registration dating the plate to 1880. It is lucky to find five such plates at once. Each plate is 7.25 inches in diameter and is being listed separately. Plate (E) is in very good condition, apart from a very shallow inch repair or regluing of a flake which is not easily noticed. T is very slight color loss at the very edge, which is hardly noticeable Each and every question deserves a quick response! Now for some practical details. Either check or money order is fine.
