Japonesque Individual Silverplate Table Castor with a stand holder for pepper shaker, salt cellar and butter pat. Produced by Wilcox Silver Plate Co. of Meriden, Connecticut between 1880 and 1895 when Far Eastern design influences were at the height of their popularity, it is rare to find a set completely intact such as this. The frame holder is delicately stylized to resemble a bamboo Japanese tray with floral legs and a curved bamboo rod with hook to hold the butter pat. The butter pat has the same bamboo edge at the top which culminates in a brass coiled rope that loops for attachment to a hook. The fit of the salt cellar and pepper shaker to the rings holding them is exact. The bowl of the butter pat has a hand-chased fan design as well as an owl perched on cherry blossom branches resembling the open floral design of the legs on the holder. While the butter pat is the only component of the set with the Wilcox mark it is clear that all pieces are original because the styling of the surface design carries through to all items. The salt spoon is Sterling, and it was with the set when I bought it years ago, but may not be original to the set, although the scale is correct for the cellar and set, and the design is simple and compatible. This set is featured in Brian D. Coleman's book The Victorian Dining Room on page 122 and was on loan from my collection for that purpose. Dimensions are as follows: Stand Width - 4.5" (Leg to Leg); Stand Depth - 2"; Height - 5.5" (To Top of Vertical Rod); Butter Pat - 2.75" X 2.75"; Salt Cellar - 1-3/8" Top Dia. X 1.5" High; Spoon - 3" Length; Pepper Shaker - 2-7/8" High X 1.5" Max. Width. This set is in excellent condition with no missing parts or pieces and no loss of silverplate. PLEASE NOTE: I have made every effort to describe this item accutately and honestly. This set is over 100 years old and my possess certain characteristics that come with being that age. If you have questions regarding this item please contact me prior to bidding because I do not ship out items on approval, nor do I accept returns. I will not be responsible for a buyer's dissatisfaction or disappointment once the item is received. While this set is in excellent condition, it is not slick department store merchandise, and if that may be your expectation then this piece may not be the best choice for you. I am a collector, not a dealer, and do not sell merchandise for a living. I am merely attempting to thin out an over ambitious collection accumulated over many years.
