Overall height: 6.5 inches, 16.5 cm; height of figure: 2 inches, 5 cm. Wood, natural gourd, glass beads. An exquisite little gourd figure topping a gourd that contained medicinal or magical substances. Both figure and gourd are oily from the palm oil that served as a matrix for the substance formerly contained within. Marc Felix, in Ã,Â"Mwana HitiÃ,Â" claims that there is a counterpoint to all eastern Tanzanian ritual artifacts with those of the Batak (from the island of Sumatra, Indonesia) contending that such art as these gourd figures has its origins in Indonesian art, probably by way of Madagascar (p.144). See Felix, Ã,Â"Mwana HitiÃ,Â" pg. 240, plate 63 for a related example. This figurine is carved from a reddish wood, thickly stained by palm oil.
