This is a beautiful, detailed African mask that I have had in my personal collection for about 15 years. It is 19" tall by 9" wide.African Senufo masks come from the North West of African in area around Ivory Coast, Mali and Burkina Faso. Senufo masks meld human and animal elements for a variety of spiritual purposes. Masks from the people of Ivory Coast often have their eyes half closed, symbolizing a peaceful attitude of self-control, and patience, as this mask does.I purchased it at an estate sale in Los Angeles. As far as I know it is an antique, but am basing that on the fact that it was quite dusty when I purchased it, and there is some modest wear, as can be seen in the photos, so I am not sure.I have been interested in and collecting African and Balinese masks for more than 20 years. I am certainly not an expert, but this is one of the most unique pieces I have ever seen, with the long thin chin, the animal tusks and large halo. Go ahead and take a look on Google - there is not much like it. Although this piece does show some signs of wear, it is of exceptional quality and could easily be in a museum or any fine art collection.
