You are bidding on a beautiful vintage "Guaranteed African Tusk Ivory" hand carved Smiling Buddha with a wooden stand, hand carved for a perfect fit. The detail in the carving on both pieces is amazing. Hopefully I have captured this in the photos. I found this incredible collector's piece in a box of things that belonged to my grandmother. I have no way to determine its exact age but I am sure that it is from before the 1989 ban on African Elephant Ivory because my grandmother passed away in the mid 70's and I can remember seeing it in her home for years before her death.

Measurements: height = 3", width = 2 1/2", depth = 2" Weight = 174 grams

Please note that t are 2 cracks (see the last 2 photos). One on the head and the other on the back. From what I have read, this is common for vintage ivory. They do not detract from the overall beauty of the piece.

I have not cleaned either the Ivory or the wood to preserve the original patina.

The Smiling Buddha, alternately known as the Laughing Buddha , Happy Buddha or Fat Buddha , is the common English description of the Buddhist deity identified as Budai to the Chinese, and Hotei to the Japanese. This deity is in turn a derivation of the Bodhisattva Maitreya .
The Smiling Buddha has been embraced by many Buddhist and Taoist practitioners, and the Buddha statues feature in many homes and places of worship. Believers associate the Smiling Buddha with positive characteristics such as happiness, prosperity, luck, wealth and contentment . As a result, you will find many of these Smiling Buddha statues and sculptures of Maitreya all over the place.

The robe is decorated with small carved yin yang symbols approx. 8mm across. Buddha is holding an egg shaped object in his right hand.
