After Titian (1488-1576) - Large Antique Old 18th / 19th Century Oil Painting

The Tribute Money

After Titian (1488-1576)

18th / 19th Century, Oil On Original Unlined Canvas

WOW! A grand scale 18th / 19th Century oil on canvas painting which depicts Christ and a Pharisee at the moment in the Gospels, when Christ is shown a coin and says "Render unto Caesar".

An immense, large scale oil with superb quality, and was painted with brilliant skill. Excellent flesh tones to both Christ & the Pharisee.

A very well observed copy, the depth of colour and handling suggest a talented hand.

The original painting by Titian was commissioned by Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, and is now in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, since 1746; Giorgio Vasari records the original as being in the Duke's study in his Vite. In 1598 Cesare d'Este took the picture to Modena, where it was sold to the Electors of Saxony in 1746 together with numerous other paintings from the d'Este collection.

(PLEASE NOTE: Some of the photo's show that the oil painting is mounted on an easel which is not part of the frame and not included in the sale.)
