This is the 1979 Avalon Hill production of the 2d Gamette supporting the popular 1977 game, Squad Leader . The focus of this expansion module was the British, French and minor powers of World War II to include the Finns, Belgians, Dutch, and Poles, many of which perished in little known battles with the Wehrmacht or in the case of the Finns, against the Russians. Though often a lost cause, many times their actions were heroic and desperate but destined for being overwhelmed by massive and irresistible forces. Many of those important scenarios are reproduced here to allow you to key situations in those forlorn campaigns. The scenario set is scenarios 21-32 and includes colorful titles such as: “Battle for the Warta Line”, Poland 1939; “Silent Death”, Finland, Dec 1939; “Action at Balberkamp”, Norway, Apr. 1940; “Resistance at Chabrehez”, Belgium May 1940; “Assault on a Queen”, Hague, Netherlands, May 1940: “The Dinant Bridgehead”, Houx, Belgium, May 1940; “Chateau de Quesnoy”, Somme, France, Jun 1940; among several others. To incorporate these actions into the series, the module includes additional rules to detail special operations such as ski troops, very important in Norway and Finland, wagons/sleighs, bridges and demolitions, trenches, assault boats, strafing aircraft, booby traps, and much more. The set includes every type of mechanized vehicle, tank, and artillery weapon used by the minor Allies, but particularly those used by the British and French in the French campaign in 1940. It has many more infantry units and leaders for use in employing these forces. The Crescendo of Doom rules also updates a few of the earlier Squad Leader rules and includes a few more special German vehicles and infantry units to complete those from Cross of Iron for use in the ski scenarios in Norway and airborne operations in the Low Countries. The game has two new mapboards, 6-7, which show lakes/bogs that were common in Finland and adds the rugged, wooded terrain that had such a crucial role in some of the new scenarios. It has two revised player aid charts which update the previous player aid charts. This set adds more than 1200 units and vehicles to the Squad Leader mix. These include unit counters of ½” (520) and 5/8” (704) sizes. They are only about 25% punched. I inventoried every single counter against a master set and the contents are in good condition. A few counters were missing but I replaced them with the exact counters from a spare set so you will have a complete set WITH THE EXCEPTION of two 8-5-8 Finnish counters as shown in the photo for which I did not have spares. I did substitute two German 8-5-8 counters that can be fully used in the Finn scenarios against the Russians and are the same color. The Squad Leader components always included far more counters than were actually needed for the included scenarios to allow players to draft their own situations or augment the available scenarios planned for the future expansion of the series. Be advised that this is a gamette set that does NOT have all components needed for play but one needs to have the earlier Squad Leader AND Cross of Iron games (both of which I am selling also this week – see my other auctions) for the Russian and German pieces to play every scenario. DO NOT BID ON THIS GAMETTE UNLESS YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE SQUAD LEADER SERIES AND HAVE SQUAD LEADER AND CROSS OF IRON OR RECOGNIZE THAT THIS GAMETTE REQUIRES ADDITIONAL MATERIALS IN ORDER TO PLAY! It is complete with everything it is supposed to have except as noted. Please note that the rules booklet does have some underlining of text. The outer box has some scuffing wear on the edges and was split on a couple of corners but I repaired these with strong cellophane packing tape.
