Presented is a genuine Artifact recovered at the Crashsite of the U.S.S. SHENANDOAH IN SEPT 1925, ITEM being a SMALL SECTION OF THE OUTER SKIN COVERING, ( 7 X 1 in )This piece was removed from a Large section of the airship skin that I have, as well as a Reprint Combined Panoramic PHOTOGRAPH ( 8 X 2 in )of the WRECKAGE, as it appeared on the Nichols farm near Sharon Ohio. This image was taken at the Crashsite of the U.S.S. SHENANDOAH IN SEPT 1925, Near Ava Ohio ( Noble Co ), These items were part of DR STANLEY NICHOLS personal collection that was recently sold at auction in CALDWELL OHIO, further I have collected Items from this Aviation Disaster for over 45 years. SHORT HISTORY OF AIRSHIP ZR-1USS Shenandoah, (ZR-1) a 2,115,000 cubic foot rigid airship, was fabricated at the Naval Aircraft Factory, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and assembled at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. During the early morning darkness of 3 September,1925. flying the first leg of a publicity flight to the Midwest, The Shenandoah was over southeastern Ohio when she abruptly encountered violent atmospheric conditions. Powerful air currents buffeted her so severely that her crew was unable to maintain control. Rising rapidly above her pressure height, then falling and rising again, her hull structure was overstressed amidships, breaking the airship in two. Shenandoah's external control car and two engine cars fell free, carrying the dirigible's Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Zachary Lansdowne, and several other men to their deaths. The stern section came down nearby, while Lieutenant Commander Charles E. Rosendahl and several men were able to fly the bow section to ground as a free balloon, landing on the Nichols farm near Sharon Ohio, In all, twenty-nine of those on board survived, and Fourteen of her complement lost their lives in this disatser. Today The Lower part of Interstate 77 South runs right past the site of this tragedy, marked only by a Flagpole and concrete blocks which outline the shape of the Craft.
