Phil Lesh loves this image so much he purchased the original artwork, and reproduced the image on the front and back inside covers of his book, Searching for the Sound . In his masterful drawing of the The Grateful Dead , Hirschfeld has Bobby screaming (of course) and Phil in The Zone, while Jerry is in his Bodhidharma-like performance pose (looking contemplative, over his eye glasses) captured so well in another style by Roberta Weir elsew in my eBay listings; Check out the mixed media ORIGINAL of Jerry as Bodhidharma by Roberta Weir. One wonders if the Grateful Dead know the significance of having been "done" by Hirschfeld. Then again those guys (and gal) have had so many amazing experiences and memories that they probably wonder which ones really happened!! With drawing dexterity comparable to Robert Crumb 's (in a totally different style) his drawings appeared in the NY Times & The New Yorker (as have Crumb's) for over seventy years (in the case of Al Hirschfeld). And like Crumb, a award winning documentary film was made about the artist, The Line King , which was nominated for an Academy Award. (The documentary about R. Crumb and his family, titled, Crumb , won the highest honor in the documentary-- the Grand Jury Award -- at Sundance Film Festival the year it was released, 1995.) Al Hirschfeld was born in St. Louis in 1903, and died shortly before his 100th birthday, on January 20, 2003, at home in New York City, in his sleep. But it isn't when he was born or when he died that is most astonishing about this artist, but rather what's represented by the dash in the memorial deadhead graphic above...what he did during his life. Back in early 1996, shortly after this edition was printed, I made an agreement with one of the artist's agent/publishers - Margo Feiden - to show Al Hirschfeld's artwork of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead on a thirty-one-city tour with the Art & Love of Music exhibit, which was traveling with Mickey Hart & Bob Weir during the first FURTHUR Festival (summer, 1996). I also agreed to invest in and distribute 20% of the edition, and I stashed some of them in my vault, and now, ten years later, have just a few remaining. Margo Feiden was one of Al's publishers and his of his limited editions and his art agent. Born in 1903, Al was not a deadhead, but Margo, a cultural sponge who soaked up all of the diverse aspects of popular culture (and counterculture) led Al to depict Jerry and the entire legendary band.
