John McDonnell designates in his will that his three slaves, Ann, Hannah, and Louiesa be freed upon his death, although if he died before Louiesa reached 16, she was to stay with Miss Christiana Box until reaching that age. McDonnell also allots $25 each from the estate to pay the expenses for the women to be sent to a free state. He further relinquishes his rights to his deceased wife`s property, to be divided between her brothers, as it would have been had my marriage with them never had taken place. Clearly a man making peace with his conscience.
