Offering for sale an Alamance County , North Carolina, salt glaze jug from the 1870 to 1890's time period. No doubt this would have been made by J. T. Boggs or his son Timothy, or one of the several neighboring Loy family members from the Snow Camp area. Most collectors of NC saltglaze are more familiar with the wares from Randolph, Moore, and Chatham counties due to the attention they get in the various pottery texts. Most of the older pottery I acquire comes from the old fashioned onsite estate auctions or purchased directly from family members that have passed these pieces on from generation to generation, thus they haven't traveled far from w they were made.. The Alamance County pieces have some very distinctive characteristics that when combined on the same piece, makes the location attribution not so difficult. This jug has a smooth, almost satin finish glaze, having the same color as a ripe scuppernong grape. The handle is narrow, slightly rounded on top, and has a strong thumb print application at the base. This handle has no grooves, although some Alamance pieces do have a reeded grooved handle. The form is slightly ovoid and has a nicely turned collared rim. It measures 8 3/4" tall and would be about a half gallon capacity.
