"The thought of making knives first started back in 1993 at my life-long friend Joe Fischer's home. He had just bought a Rudy Ruana knife and I really liked the way that knife was put together because it was so solid but had style, too. I thought it was cool that Rudy used old truck springs for the blade and cast the handle from aluminum. I wanted to have a knife like that, and knew the only way I could was to make it myself. I have been fascinated with knives since childhood, so trying to make one seemed the natural thing to do. I decided to try the Rudy way for my first knife, and picked up an old truck spring from the wrecking yard. Using a 4 inch hand held grinder, I did my best to copy the profile and hollow grind and everything else about that Rudy blade. It turned out pretty well. Then I got real busy with my job and forgot about that blade until my brother, Ted Warren, prodded me in 1998, and I got back to work on it. When I finished that knife all I could think was that I had to do this again. I knew from that moment on that this is who I am. This is what I am going to do. And it has had a grip on me ever since. I quit my "real" job about 8 years ago and have been supporting my wife and two girls by making knives ever since. I can't imagine doing anything else. It's not a great living, but it is a living doing what I am meant to do. Like a great knife maker once said, I will make knives until I can't make them anymore. Jerry Johnson from Spring City, Utah, gave me some great ideas that left me wondering why I didn't think of that. He is also one of the best makers and the best kind of people out there. Todd and Tonya Begg from Spanaway, Washington, have helped me in so many ways. I was lucky enough to be invited to spend a day in Thad Buchanan's shop in Prineville, Oregon, which was priceless. I also must mention Dave Rappaport and Jim Wells of Portland, Oregon. These are just some of the great people I have met in 12 years of making knives. There are so many others who have helped to whom I am very grateful, too many to mention." We are p...
