Six pairs of unfinished Eskimo snow goggles carved by Noah Wisecarver, a Yupik Eskimo, formerly of the Alaska Bering Sea village of Newtok. The are carved in spruce and Aspen wood and are six inches length and very slightly in width but are roughl 2 " wide. Four of the goggles are unpainted and two have a base coat of red or rust color paint (traditional Yupik Eskimos colors). The goggles are used to protect the eyes of hunter in the spring w the sun reflects off the snow or ice at an angle that results in the eye balls being sun burned. This is snow blindness and the eyes are protected in the same way that polaroid glasses protect the eyes. Yupik Eskimo hunters-our relatives still occasionally wear them during spring seal hunting. T are six unfinished pairs for sale. The highest bidder may choose the pair or pairs that they want. Lower bids may request a choice but may have to take a random choice. Information on tradtional painting may be requested from seller.
