Exquisite whale baleen basket, the epitomy of handwork, craftsmanship and folk art. This masterfully created basket measures 3.75 inches to the top of the whale tail. This is a very valuable basket, offered with no reserve at a very low starting bid, to give many people an opportunity to bid on such a wonderful piece. It is in excellent condition This work of art is by Point Hope artist James Omnik. T are many steps involved in making the kind of fine baleen work Omnik does, and after all the hours and hours of work that go into weaving a basket his daughter polishes the little ivory whale flukes for the top of the baskets ~this is a walrus ivory whale tail top. Omnik says he is aiming for the perfection he says he saw in his father's work. The winning bidder of this auction will also receive the publication with the story on James Omnik, it is included in the auction. Because the basket is small, the shipping will not be much, but it will depend on the final sale value as to the amount of insurance needed for the auction, which will be figured after the auction is completed.
