This elaborate sterling silver fish serving piece was made by Albert Coles of New York. The company was later acquired by Geo. W. Shiebler in about 1870. It is elaborately etched and carved with fanciful flowers and scrollwork in the Victorian taste for decoration of every surface. There is gadrooning along the upper slightly curved edge, stylized scrolls, a honeycomb pattern on the flat of the blade. This is combined with a barley twist handle which flattens to receive yet another bit of beading and an almost butterfly like flower, topped with a shell motif. This is a wonderous item and sure to spark a lively conversation. It is marked with the Albert Coles Hallmark dating it ca 1850. It is in excellent condition and has no monogram and no damage. 12" long
