Union Pacific Diesel C855B model from Alco Models (KMT). Union Pacific owned 3 of these impressive, unique diesel locomotives. One was a cabless booster. The prototype locomotives were built by American Locomotive Company (ALCo) in 1964 exclusively for UP. Mechanical problems plagued these locomotives from the beginning. Their very poor performance led to early retirement and scrapping in 1972. A scarce, hard to find, out of production model. The model was manufactured by KMT and imported by Alco Models in the 1970's as catalog #D-105. Both KMT and Alco Models are no longer in business. The body is as manufactured (no window glazing or lighting). The stock model had all wheel drive. A large, chunky open frame motor powered both outside trucks through KMT's tower drive system. The large spur gear on the worm gear shafts, driven by the tower gears, was inside the truck. The outside and inside trucks were linked by small spring universals. The outside trucks were attached to the bolsters through a slotted hole, which allowed excessive play for sharp curves. T was no window glazing, lights, decoder, or sound. The model features a Micromotion motor with skew wound armature and ball bearings.
