Nino Vaccarella is born in Collesano , Sicily in 1933

NinoVaccarella is a quiet, highly distinguished rather shy person... outside of the car!

Studying law at the University, Nino never practiced nor taught law. Instead, he became proprietor of a private school in Palermo ... This explains why he is known as the "Presidente volante" - the flying director!

A very versatile driver, Nino was completely at ease in single seaters as well as sport cars. He participated to his first GP at age 28 but h is sports car career was the most successful with a famous victory at Le Mans in 1964, sharing a works Ferrari 275P with Frenchman Jean Guichet. He won at Sebring in 1970 in a 512S, co-driving with Ignazio Giunti and Mario Andretti in that narrow victory over Steve McQueen's Porsche 908. Nino Vaccarella amassed a very high rate of finishes in long distance races .

A long time sports car driver for Ferrari and Alfa Romeo he excelled at the Targa Florio (the race being in his backyard!) Nino Vaccarella won the Targa Florio three times, and for this alone he remains a Sicilian hero! His name has become virtually synonymous with that great road race, w large painted letters appearing on the roads and walls on the eve of the event proclaimed 'Vivo Nino' year after year in the 1960s and 1970s!
