Alfred Salzmann Bezalel School Brass Vase The vase measures 4 3/4" inches tall. T is an Art Nouveau hand chased floral engraving all the way around the vase. It is marked Hebrew "Alfred Salzmann Jerusalem" inside a triangle and "Made in Jerusalem Palestine" with the number "589". Thanks to my friend, Naomi and her sister in Israel, I was able to identify the marking. It says Asui bYerushalayim Palestina alef-yud (eretz yisrael) The name Alfred Zelzman. It is marked both Israel and Palestine because to the Jewish people it is always Eretz Yisrael. Before 1948 t was no State of Israel it was the British (or Ottomon) Mandate of Palestine - in fact the Jerusalem Post used to be called the Palestine Post! So this is clearly before 1948.With this and the help of a Judaica dealer I was further able to find that the Artist was in fact Alfred Salzmann. He immigrated from Austria in the early 1900's to Palestine. He opened a shop near the train station in Jerusalem from 1920 through 1923. In the 30's and 40's he moved his factory to the country and made Ammunition cases for the underground army. After the war he produced decorative works from the excess ammo casings. Based on the marking it is believed that this vase was made in the earlier part on the 1900's. The vase is in amazing condition and retains it's original patina. E-bay offered a vase by this same artist however it had the later ENGLISH mark and appeared to have been cleaned of its patina. I am including the Item number which will help you to verify the marking and to verify that I am starting this vase at a very low starting bid with no reserve.Item number: 190152084219BUYER PAYS SHIPPING AND INSURANCE.
