My husband has had thissword in his collection for several years. This is a very rare sword because t were not nearly as many made as commonly seen Civil War-dated swords but they were still widely used in the Civil War by the North and more commonly the South. This sword is in great shape considering it is 162 years old. Three-arm brass hand guard hasbeautiful aged dark brass patina, and pommel cap is lightly marked âeoenwpâe. Straight blade measures right at 35 1/2 inches and still has a strong, sharp unrusted slightly-swayed point. Blade is a wonderful unrusted, unpitted dark gray color with dark freckles, and has several tiny edge nicks that just show that it was actually used, but not abused. Base of the blade still shows original leather bumper and blade is well-marked US/JH on one side and with N.P. AMES/CABOTVILLE on the other. I showed a picture of the pommel cap which is lightly marked âeoenwpâe and that the sword has obviously not been taken apart. Grip has full leather or oil-skin wrapping and 19 brass strands. Scabbard has dark brown/black unpitted, unrusted fairly-even patina with two hangers with rings, throat, and drag and does not have the screw near the throat which is often seen in import scabbards. Scabbard has several very minor dents but has remained in remarkably good condition and obviously did a great read more
