This authentic piece is an exceptional top-quality sculpture c. 1910 that embodies the aesthetic of the Art Nouveau design era. It stands 17 1/2 inches high including the base of a beautiful sienna-colored marble, embellished with an unengraved plaque. The sculpture weighs almost 7 pounds and is created from a combination of metals that appears to be a lustrous copper over brass. The female figure holds two branches of laurel leaves above her head, an ancient symbol for victory that is also incorporated into the Olympic emblem. Her swept-back hair is topped by a crown of three delicate stars, and her gown flows gracefully with all of the swirls distinctive to Art Nouveau. The figure stands on a half-globe decorated with two parallel lines and stars. The laurel leaves and the noble stance of the woman lead me to believe that this sculpture may have been commissioned as an award for an outstanding cultural or sports achievement. The signature I. ÖFNER is engraved along the metal base and would indicate that the artist was likely German or Austrian. I have researched the signature to no avail. If anyone knows the bona fides of this sculptor, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. I bought this lovely sculpture 35 years ago in Vienna from a dealer in fine objéts d'art. According to my current European dealer contacts, the stated price is correct for such a fine exemplar of its artistic period. Please do not waste my time or yours with ridiculously low-ball offers. I'm happy to consider reasonable bids from serious, knowledgeable buyers. I will be selling other fine pieces from collections acquired during four decades of globe-trotting so if you are drawn to quality items at fair prices, please bookmark my site.
