is a stunning example of a woman's hat pin in what tests out to be unmarked silver. A hatpin of this vintage was traditionally used by a lady to keep her hat secured to her elaborate hair style. What makes this elegant piece of jewelry so unique is the design at the top of the pin, which is a beautifully cast silver battle axe upon which is mounted a white gold rendition of the active badge for the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. The mounting is superb! The ATO badge has been centered perfectly and was obviously intended to be the prominent part of the design. The size of the badge is much smaller than a contemporary badge at only about 3/8' by 3/8' which leads me to suspect that this may have been an early sweetheart pin that some brother gave to his very stylish girlfriend. It is a very well made badge with the classic two piece construction as well as exceptionally fine enameling and engraving. I can only assume this is white gold because due to the pin placement I cannot get a sufficient "scratch" to do an acid test for karat quality. It is definitely not silver (no tarnish) and of too high a quality to really be anything other than gold. The total length of the pin is just a little over 9 ¼ inches.
