William Forsyth ALS to Karsick & Harper, Oct. 28, 1818. 3p. From Matanzas, Cuba, Forsyth writes to the Baltimore firm of Karsick & Harper regarding a “mud machine” to which the government had apparently granted him exclusive privilege for six years. More importantly, though, he continues on behalf of a Capt. Macomb requesting insurance coverage of $3,700 for a 1/8th interest in the Spanish slaveship Grand Labarin, bound for the Coast of Africa. The ship, he notes, has been altered into an Hermaphrodite Brig and is considered to be a first rate besides Capt. Macomb is a most active Navigator and an experienced commander of slaveships. To drive home the point that the voyage would be profitable and safe, Forsyth adds, it is considered the risk will not be increased by such a vessel as the Grand Labarin to going to the North of the line.
