1 pg. ALS, 20 Clinton Place, by Evert A. Duyckinck (1816-78) Editor, Critic, Scholar, friend and Editor to Edgar Allen Poe and Herman Melville. In this letter to John C. Darley, Esq. (Darley was an architect who helped reconstruct Chestnut Street Theater in Philadelphia, and the son-in-law of famous American painter,Thomas Sully, who painted "Washington Crossing the Delaware"). Evert writes "... Will you please send the outlines in some stout ? or portfolio by the bearer, a gentleman of your acquaintance. I will show them at the Art Union and return them to you tomorrow. By the way I called myself at your house yesterday but you were out. Should you not be in to receive this note can you manage to get the outlines to me by 7 this evening? Yours Truly Evert A. Duyckinck." [Evert, if he didn't get your note, how will he know to bring the outlines to you by 7?] Born in N.Y., Duyckinck started as a lawyer, then concentrated on literary pursuits. From 1840-2 he was Co-editor of the Arcturus (a journal of books and opinions) then in 1847 became editor of the "Literary World." In 1855 he was co-editor of The Cyclopaedia of American Literature. He was also behind many famous publications, including "Mother Goose Melodies" which propelled the concept of "nursery rhymes" as we know them. He was a correspondent and friend to both Edgar Allen Poe and Herman Melville, and edited some of their works. He also edited some of Thackeray's 1st American Editions. He was a Trustee of Columbia Univ., Contributor to the National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans, and also the "Lives and Portraits of the Presidents of the U.S." He also wrote many memorials.
