A spiritual treasure and a piece of history From the private chapel of the Counts of Cesarini, Castel Viscardo, near Orvieto, Umbria: A magnificent, large gilt wood altar reliquary, Orvieto/Umbria, Italy, ca. 1750, ca. 16 inches in height. A colleague and art historian from Arezzo/Italy, obtained this piece a few month ago from the Conte (Count of) Cesarini, residing in Castel Viscardo near the historical city (and former Papal residence) of Orvieto in Umbria The Counts of Cesarini belong to Italy's "black nobility" with close ties to the Church; four of their sons became Cardinals. Umbria is one of the historically and spiritually most important regions, homeland of St. Francis of Assisi and many other important saints. In the Cathedral of Orvieto, the host and corporal of the Eucharistic miracle of Bolsena are venerated, which lead to the institution of the feast of Corpus Christi by Pope Urban IV in 1264. This reliquary is sealed with five red wax seals of a Cardinal with the threads intact. Inside is a rare and precious relic Ex Velo B(eatae) M(ariae) V(irginis): Of the Veil of the Blessed Virgin Mary We know from pilgrim reports that vestments of Our Lady were venerated in Nazareth already in the 4 th century.
