Two Altec Lansing 802D Drivers Original Gaskets No Horns, although a pair of 511b Horns are available in my other auctions. Please Altec’s roots go all the way back to the advent of sound reproduction, being a direct descendent of the earliest motion picture speaker developer, Western Electric. Throughout the 1920’s Western Electric developed speakers for Hollywood’s emerging sound movies. Early on, this industry had extraordinary potential, although as the great depression set-in the last thing people had money for was entertainment. This led Western Electric to close their motion picture department diverting their interest to less perilous goals. Seeing an opportunity in a very inopportune time was a group of very ambitious ex-WE engineers. George Carrington Sr., E.L Conrow, and Alvis Ward purchased the existing assets of WE motion picture audio department and formed the Altec (for "all technical")corporation. Establishing an entertainment related business at the height of the depression, where the largest company in the US failed was, in the opinion of many, a recipe for disaster. All predictions indicated that this company would fail right out of the gate. However, the assets the critics failed to consider was the optimism and resolve of the 3 company founders and the heart and talent of 295 of the best trained and most experienced staff in the audio industry. In just a few short years Altec became the #1 manufacturer of professional and consumer audio equipment in the world The 802 was the largest and earliest driver in the 800 series that began production in the 1940’s. The 802 went through a total of 5 generations spanning into the 1980’s. There is a lot of confusion about the 802. It is a totally different driver then the 804 & 806, which slowly replaced the 802 in many of Altec’s later systems. The 802 contains a larger magnetic structure and higher output and is far superior. The 802, along with the later 808, is the only 800 series driver that is recommended from use with the 500Hz & 800Hz horn. This auction is for a pair of 802D’s the 4th generation offered new from1957-1972. The 802D is an outstanding driver utilized in many of Altec’s top professional speaker systems, including the famed Voice of the Theater A7 500Hz. When used in conjunction with the 511 or 811 Sectoral horns it provides a highly efficient, distortion free, uniform response over a wide range. This powerful compression type driver contains design elements and construction quality from an era long gone by and has earned a reputation of being extremely durable and virtually indestructible. The voice coil of the driver is 1 3/4" in diameter and is edgewound with aluminum ribbon for coupling to the 2 1/4" aluminum diaphragm with tangential compliance. A mechanical phasing plug with two exponential acoustic slots is used for proper phase relationship between the sound from the center and outer edge of the diaphragm and the sound from the voice coil assembly. This assures maximum high frequency reproduction with remarkably uniform response The 802D provides incomparably smooth, clean, clear, and precise frequency response over a wide range from 500Hz to past the range of audibility without the need for a crossover in the critical high frequency range.
