his fascinating nineteenth century album quilt was found in Connecticut and features an astonishing variety of subjects, from lyres and a rare cross and anchor to a prettily detailed velvet cat, a great selection of fruits growing on tiny trees and a pretty variety of flowers always in Turkey Red. Many of the fruits are individually plumply stuffed and the twig of a cherry tree is even being visited by a wonderful little red-jacketed, yellow-bellied stuffwork bird! The on-point blocks are cheerily framed in vibrant triple stripes alternating between cheddar and red, their intersections marked with nine-patches, and the quilt is mostly framed on three sides by rows of stout little potted buds. Though it would be accurate to call the quilt fanciful, its wonderfully strange unpredictability stretches far beyond simple whimsy. There are unusual three dimensional details throughout, odd depictions and startling inclusions at every turn, not to mention considerable mystery about the quilting and a really all-inclusive approach to fabric content. The fabrics are a curious mix of cotton, silk, wool, velvet and with a huge variety between utter filmy delicacy and very, sturdy, stout weaves. Capping it all off are the most tauntingly watery, faded, and utterly tiny appliqud strips of white beneath most of the featured subjects. They look like tiny handcut museum labels on that brown background but they're terribly illegible at this point. The best I can make out are a couple of Evanses, a few Mrs., perhaps a Mary, a Hester and I think a Charles. Perhaps someone more determined could tease out some longer coherent strings and zero in on the origin of this singular early find. SizeThe quilt measures about 76" x 78" . The on-point blocks are 10 1/2 to 11 inches square. The red and cheddar sashing strips are about 1 inch wide each and so the Nine Patches at their intersections are about 3 inches square. The stuffed cherries are less than 3/4-inch in diameter and the velvet grapes, just over 1 inch across. The velvet cat stands just over 5 inches tall and his tiny eyes are just over 1/4-inch wide. Quilting The hand-quilting is fine, with tiny stitches numbering 7-8 to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. The sashing is crisply, and nearly invisibly, quilted in the ditch and the subjects of the blocks are quilted around their perimeters, with rows of scalloping often filling in the remaining space around them. But this is not all you see on the reverse of the quilt. There's a lot more quilting on the reverse. In white. It's mostly sets of diagonal freehand lines arranged in wedges. Much as I'd love it if something mysterious was concealed inside, I think its just a case of a spent quilt with a fantastically sturdy backing being repurposed. I've pictured a slit in the brown fabric through which you can see a glimpse of pretty sprigged pink calico from the front of the original quilt. (Description continues below.) (Continued from above) Construction The narrow straight-grain machine-applied Turkey Red binding is just over 1/4-inch wide and shows splits and popped holes here and there, but is mostly intact. The batting is thin and even, but heavy, the weight surely coming from the additional fabric from an earlier quilt inside that's attached to the reused backing. The backing is natural muslin, very sturdy and strong, but with lots of little stains and toning, as well as some big water stains. Condition The quilt's condition is strong and very sturdy, but it is in unwashed, as found condition and does show water staining, some of which caused dye issues in areas. T...
