Sarreguemines French Majolica Toby Face Jug The Sarreguemines factory was founded in 1790 in an old oil mill on the bank of the Sarre River in France . Today the territory is in the Lorraine province. Because of the high quality of the pottery made t, the factory later became known as the "Wedgewood of France." Following the introduction of majolica in England in 1851, the manufacture of this type of pottery was produced on the continent, particularly in France . Sarreguemines majolica is known for the fine quality, subtle coloring, and excellent detail. The whimsical charm of these tobyjugs has made them highly collectible in today's market. This unusual tobyjug is known as Suspicious eyes according to the Sarreguemines factory records, though often the jug (pitcher) is simply referred to as "the Admiral." The face of this hard to find jug has a mischievous smile, thus leading to the name it was given. One wonders just what he may have been thinking! This item was part of a large majolica jug collection for many years. I acquired this piece from the collector. Consistent with its age, t is crazing overall. The interior is the deep turquoise so well-known on much of the Sarreguemines majolica. On the bottom t are three stilt marks from w the piece sat in the kiln. The black Sarreguemine France mark and the impressed model number 3320 is shown in the photo. This piece is approximately 75 years old. On the bottom near the rim is a very small indention that was done at the time of production and is covered by the glaze. The pitcher is 7" at the highest part, 9" at the widest part from the front of his head to the back of the handle, and 5.75" side to side. T are no cracks and the piece is in excellent condition. I make every effort to describe the item as thoroughly as possible; however, I do guarantee your satisfaction. If you are not satisfied, please notify me with three days of receipt of the item giving the reason. Item must be returned with in 7 days.
