I'll never forget when this carousel horse was found in the mid-1980's from my first storage locker buy in Kansas City, MO. I got word that a supercollector type had a ton of sports collectibles in this locker. Nobody really knew for sure, but that was the word on the street. I knew management and they concurred that the possibility was there for vintage Royals, Chiefs, Negro League, programs, baseballs, signed pieces, etc. was this guy's passion. Word on the street was pretty good because at this sale were a couple Kansas City Royals players and they were introduced by the auctioneer to the receptive crowd. Well, when the door was raised, this locker was stuffed to the rafters with stacked plastic and wooden boxes and you could see that it was sports memorabilia...and lots of it! Buying storage lockers for profit, back in that day, was not what it is today with the tv show and all. It wasn't that competitive between a ton of people, but whoever was there you had to beat them. And I was not going to be denied that day as I was bidding against KC Royals players and several restaurant types who covet this merchandise. I won. I was a little scared at how much over what I planned to bid I had to go to win it all. But eventually, my wildest hopes were realized and I sold everything out of that locker, made a pile of money, and the rest is history. Even the owner of the famous Chappelle's Sports Bar in North KC bought some of my KC A's programs! As you can see by my various ebay listings, I buy and sell collectible merchandise for a living now, imagine that. Long before ebay was ever a glimmer in Meg Whitman's eye. Here's the rub on the locker, though...in the corner was this carved carousel horse with an insurance settlement paperwork rubber-banded around the good leg. As you see the horse now is how I found the horse in my locker 27 years ago! Insurance documents mentioned a pay-off for $4300 and I never thought much of it because my primary purpose in buying the collection was concentrating on sports. Well, I kept the horse all these years. Never researched what it is or who carved it or anything. I got busy with life. To the right guy, this might be finding a minor jackpot lottery ticket on the sidewalk. I don't know. I can offer nothing more about this horse than it measures about 3 ft. long x 2.5 ft. tall, has obvious damage, one good leg to copy from if you carve or restore, incredible carving detail, beautiful colors of rich brown and tans, and weighs at least 20 lbs...at least. If you carve or can artistically use the good pieces of the horse, I welcome your bid. I'm selling "as is", just the way you see it. I'll start low and wherever the bidding stops, somebody is going to win my horse. I'll package it up with bubblewrap, put it in a good sturdy box, and ship it to you for whatever purpose. This horse could've been something special you'd see at Sotheby's in NY, or a kid's amusement park carousel horse, or high end decorative piece in a jetsetter's summer home, who knows? Let's see what happens...
