This is a beautiful, very rare and very early antique file cabinet.
INDEED A RARE ONE
I HAVE NEVER SEEN ONE WITH A ROLL UP LOCKING FRONT
Manufactured around 1880 by The Amberg File and Index Company in Chicago, NY and London, this Amberg's Patent Cabinet Letter File, features 24 letter size drawers, 3 rows of 8, in WHAT I ASSUME IS OAK, with the original Amberg stencil on front that says: 'AMBERG'S PATENT CABINET LETTER FILE'.
The company [AMBERG] was one of the first to produce cabinets for document storage, and was established in 1868. And! In 1876 the Amberg file cabinet was awarded a medal at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
I believe the cabinet was manufactured in AROUND, 1880.
The overall dimensions are approximately 41 1/2 inches W, 42 1/2 inches wide and 13 1/4 inches deep. the top is a bit larger and measures 16" x 44"
The dovetailed drawers measure approximately 12 inches wide, 10 inches deep and 3 1/4 inches tall. Most of the drawers still retains the original, horizontally placed, Amberg sticker to notate files that were transferred from the cabinet. Dovetails on All 24 drawers and are open, as original, on the back, for easy removal of the contents.
T is some damage and i will attempt to list: needs to be refinished. i believe it is complete. i assume t were drawer pulls on front of drawers that are not present. some drawers slide hard. the pull down front slides hard but does work. top is slightly warped at the front corners. the base of cabinet has loss of varnish/finish. no key for roll down front but lock is t small 1" long chip on front.
Please ask any questions you may have and I will be happy to answer ASAP and i can porvide more pictures if requested.
