I usually try to save a piece like this for the appropriate time of the year... in this case... Thanksgiving. Ya' know... Turkey... Thanksgiving!!!... But what normally happens is I run across the old Turkey about a week after the holiday has passed!!!... Just the story of my life... always a day late... and a dollar short!!!... But I feel sure t will be a Thanksgiving sometime this year... so why don't I just put this up for auction now... and let the new owner of this Turkey... miss the holiday!!!... This is a Amberina Glass... Turkey Whimsie... hand made by the L. E. Smith Glass Company. This handsome fellow stands about 7 and ¼ inches tall... 5 and ¼ inches wide across the fanned out tail... and about 6 and ½ inches long... front to back. I see a few small "air-bubbles" in the glass... but other than that "he" appears to be in excellent condition. Smith Glass called this their "Autumn Turkey". And I'm told they only made one very short run of these guys... in this stunning Amberina Glass. Hey guys and gals... back up and take another look at the photos of this unbelievable piece of Amberina glass. In my half century of working with glassware... you know I've seen some outstanding pieces of this elusive... unusual Amberina Glass. But this fellow is one of the very best I've ever encountered. We're usually excited when we find the glass running from the light Golden Amber... to darker shades of Orange. But with this Autumn Turkey... the glass color runs from that light Golden Honey Amber... right through an "array" of shades... until it turns a deep... dark... Ruby Red. The glass workers have done a truly outstanding job with this piece. For those of you unfamiliar with Amberina Glass... let me explain. This is a glass color that is achieved... not by a blending of two or more glass colors... but rather by a heating process... or second firing... that actually changes the color of the glass. The piece comes out of the mold anyw from an almost Clear Glass... to a light Golden Amber color. Before the glass has a chance to cool down... another step is taken. A glass worker directs a fiery blast of heat... from an array of torches... at the areas were the color change is desired. I've seen pieces that range in color from near crystal clear... to deep Blood Red... all in the same piece of glass... as this Autumn Turkey does. The more intense the heat... and the longer it's applied... the deeper red the glass becomes. This takes... from what I've seen over the years... a lot of time consuming hand work... with stunning... but not always predictable... end result. Us glass collectors love it... but most glass makers are reluctant to invest the efforts required to make it. And in a "turn of glass" it's not unusual to find a vast range of colors in the finished pieces. Wouldn't this be the perfect receptacle to serve your cranberry sauce in at your next "turkey dinner"!!!... Or... how about a "stash" of Candy Corn... or one of your other favorite candies. He's a handsome fellow... and will surely bring years of pleasure to his new owner!!!...
