Up for sale is an exceptional ambrotype of Brigadier General Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert & staff. The image is in amazing condition, and appears to have been very well stored over time. The image measures approx 31⁄4 inches by 2 3⁄4 , and is approx 1⁄4 inch thick. The copper/brass trim around the outside edge and back is very clean, and the black paint on the back of the image has no scratches. As to the quality of the image itself, the pictures below demonstrate how amazing it is. Unfortunately however, the image has no case.I have found an albumen copy of this image on the website of the General Torbert Society (see link below), but this daguerreotype, not surprisingly, has notably more detail. Additionally, the albumen has been cropped, while this image shows Torbert's HQ flag. I believe the image is of Brigadier General Torbert and his Cavalry staff in the Shenandoah Valley , while on campaign in 1864. Torbert has an amazing history, having graduated from West Point and served with distinction throughout the Civil War. He received multiple promotions and was noted for his courage in combat on many occasions, and eventually achieved the rank of Brigadier General, and on 8 August, 1864 was made the Chief of Cavalry of the Middle Military Division in the Shenandoah campaign.
