Description: Made by James and Ralph Clews in the period between 1821 to 1834, the bread or side plate offered in this auction has dark blue transfer decoration and belongs in the "America and Independence" series produced by that pottery. The series is characterized by the festoon border with the names of the 15 states that made up the country at the time and the female figures of Justice holding Washington's portrait, and Independence wearing the Liberty cap and holding the Liberty pole. The plate featured measures 8" in diameter and has a slightly scalloped rim. The central vignette on its well shows a two-storey mansion on a hilltop and the circular drive leading to it. It is signed on the underside with the pottery's impressed mark. Condition: Condition on this piece is very good. T are no chips or hairlines nor is the body stained or otherwise discolored. The dark blues used for the transfer are deep and the transfer has been nicely applied and is easily legible. I would like to mention a shallow, glazed-over flake on the underside of the rim - it happened during production and is not at all visible unless one turns the plate over to look at its underside. T is also one very tight crack in it, which begins near the center of the well and goes as far as the begining of the surround, approximately 2 3/4" long. It feels rather stable and is not detectible on the front because of the dark colors that were used for the decoration. This piece displays excellently and you should not miss the opportunity to add it to your collection!Thank you very much for your interest.
