Texas Estate Antique HANDMADE Quilt: 1/2 OFF @Checkout Wonderful folk art treasure features the "BROKEN STAR" (primitive) pattern. The center star is 8 points surrounded by another 8 point star surrounded by a 16 point star. A multitude of vibrant colors (lots of blues) for the day and the entire quilt has been HAND PIECED & HAND STITCHED including the 1/4th" FOUR SIDED binding. There are by our best count well OVER 1,000 individual pieces on the quilt top ALONE. My Grandmother used to call the backing "un-bleached domestic" but not being a textile expert I do not know the technical correct name for the "feedsack" type cotton. The quilt top panels, the blue & green background/panel borders and entire back appear to be all COTTON (some feedsack) and the entire top & back has aprox: 7 stitches per inch. There is just SO much stitching detail on this particular quilt and the stitching appears to have been done by a fairly seasoned group or individual in their/her day. The quilt has a thin batting. The quilt has been used & washed in the past..however.. in those days quilts were not usually washed..they were "aired" & "sanitized" by the sun annually and the quilt has the EXPECTED 100 yr.old WEAR of annual use with moisture spots/runs & specks and storage spots present that would be expected on an old textile that was not made for the future "collectors" market. I found several VERY small holes (shown in photos) that appear caused from storage or snagging?. The darker blue center star "feedsack" fabric has a couple of panels that have small splits and loose stitching. If there are any other issues, I just do not see them. There are NO signs of anything but NORMAL wear and tear and I believe the needed restoration will be minimal..I would PRESERVE the textile only and do as little as possible. According to the information I was given by the 74 year old current inherited owner of the quilt I will give it a date estimate of: 1900-1930...however...she said this particular quilt was quilted by her grandmother and it may be much older...and remember the date is only an ESTIMATE...I grew up watching the ladies in my family quilt but am certainly no textile expert. Appears to have had good storage...again for not being made to market to the future collector...and the quilt has been stored now for almost another lifetime (50 years) and is being offered to you in "as found" basically untouched condition directly from the ORIGINAL FAMILY HEIRS. While surfing the quilts here on eBay, I found more than one seller that specializes in "cleaning" old textiles..again not being the "old textile" expert, I believe the quilt will clean up beautifully if that is your desire..I would use it as a wall hanging as is if I were to keep it. I recently attended an antique quilt sale here in Texas...there were close to 2 hundred quilts for sale at this popular annual event and even as "raw found" as this one is ..it is FAR nicer than any QUILT I saw at the sale..most being FULL of holes etc.......AND not ONE quilt for sale that was priced under: $1,000.00.....
