A crisp and clear brown transfer American Historical Staffordshire dinner plate (10 ¼" in diameter) Near (Nr) Fishkill from the Picturesque Views of the Hudson River Series by James & Ralph Clews, c. 1825. The plate shows a Fishkill, New York , along the Hudson , with a country road, cottages, etc. The border includes birds and flowers. The plate has a boldly scalloped edge with white rim between the transfer and the edge. It also has a brown cartouche on the back (a bit blurred - manufacturing flaw) "Picturesque View, Nr. Fishkill, Hudson River ".
The plate is in very fine condition: the color is medium chocolate brown and the transfer is very sharp, the glaze shiny. T are no cracks, lines or repairs and the plate rings clear when snapped with you finger. Some very light utensil marks that can only be seen when the plate is tilted at the proper angle to the light. T is a small chip on the foot rim (the underside edge that touches the table) and some light glaze flicking on the very edge. The Picturesque Views of the Hudson series was very popular. It is found in several colors and included numerous views along the Hudson and other Eastern locations as far west as Pittsburgh . Jeffrey Snyder, in his book Historical Staffordshire: American Patriots and Views, devotes 4 pages to the series (pp. 52-55). Buyer prepays, plus postage.
