A large and very impressive American HistoricalStaffordshire Platter showing the Pennsylvania Hospital (now part of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia) from the Beauties of American Series by Ridgway, c. 1830. The platter measures 18âe x 14âe and has a deep well on the right side. The transfer scene shows the original hospital building with 3 men standing in front. The border consists of large flower medallions separated by scrolls. The platter is marked with a blue cartouche: âeoeBeauties of America: Pennsylvnaia Hospital , Philadelphia , I (J) & W Ridgwayâe. The platter is in fine condition, used but not abused. The color is rich and the transfer crisp. T are no cracks or lines or repairs (I cleaned it in peroxide), and the only chip is on one of the feet that the platter sits on. The platter does have some surface scratching on its face, as seen in the photos. (Please let me know if you would like additional photos). Ridgwayâe(tm)s Beauties of America Series had numerous views of important American buildings from Boston to Charleston and Savannah . Hospital, Almshouses, Asylums and Churches were favorite architectural subjects, and the series makes an impressive record of public buildings in the early decades of the United States . Jeffrey Snyder devotes several pages to this series in his book Historical Staffordshire: American Patriots and Views (pp. 75-77). American Historical Staffordshire Well & Tree Platters are hard to find and this is one you could even use to serve your Christmas Turkey. Buyer prepays, plus postage (shipping weight for the platter will be about 8 ½ pounds).
