From the Beauties of America Series by John & WilliamRidgway, is a 14 ¾" meat platter with a crisp blue transfer showing the Deaf & Dumb Assylum, Hartford , Connecticut , c. 1830. The blue transfer shows a large 4-story building in a park-like setting and the platter has the flower medallion border. It measures 14 ¾" x 10 ¾" and is from one of the most beautiful and collected American Historical Staffordshire Series. The back is marked with a blue cartouche: Beauties of America, Deaf & Dumb Assylum, Hartford , Conn. , I (J) & W Ridgway. The platter has great color and a very crisp transfer. Save 2 faint hairlines, one at the upper right (1") and the other at the lower left (1 ¾), the platter is in wonderful, very fine condition with no crazing and virtually no utensil marks (and the ones that are t can only be seen when you hold the platter at a certain angle to the light). The hairlines are faint and barely noticeable on the front side of the platter; a bit more so on the back; they are stable and do not threaten the integrity of the piece. The Series is pictured in all the reference books on American Historical Staffordshire and shows a variety of public buildings in the US . Jeffrey Snyder devotes several pages to the Series in his book Historical Staffordshire: American Patriots & Views (pp. 75-77). This view is not easy to find, especially without surface wear. Buyer prepays, plus postage.
