From Enoch Wood's Irregular Shell Border Series, is a 9 5/8" (approx.) dark cobalt blue Open Veggie or Serving Dish. The pattern is titles "East Cowes, Isle of Wight" and the transfer shows a very busy, windswept harbor scene with sailing boats, a row boat and what appears to be a 3 mast sailing ship at anchor. On the far shore is a large castle or fortress and a windmill. This grotto-like scene is framed by the wonderful Shell Border. The exterior long sides of the dish have 2 different harbor scene transfers, also surrounded by sea shells. The bowl is marked with the Enoch Wood Impressed Eagle Mark.
This open serving dish measures approximately 9 5/8" x 7 3/8"; it is 2 1/8" deep. The piece is in excellent condition: the blue color is deep and rich and the transfer crisp and clear. T are no chips, cracks, lines or restorations, and the surface shows only very minor utensil wear (you have to hold the dish at just the right angle to the light to see it). The Irregular Shell Border series is one of the most important and desirable of the Historical Staffordshire patterns. T are numerous American Views, along several from around the world (Africa, Ireland and the British Isles). This bowl is listed in Sam Laidacker's Anglo American China (Vol. 1, #WS10, p. 47), in Arman's "Historical Staffordshire: An Illustrated Check List" (#135, p. 60). Examples in this condition come along very infrequently. Buyer prepays, plus postage.
