The rich floral colors of this Mary Elizabeth Price still life are reinterpreted with a slightly muddier palate in the folds of the drapery that lines the scene. The artist studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art, and with noted New Hope School painter William L. Lathrop. She exhibited her work at the National Academy of Design, and with The Ten Philadelphia Painters a group of entirely female artists who mounted a popular series of exhibitions in the earlier half of the century. This oil on artist board is signed "Mary Elizabeth Price 1939" in pencil on the reverse. Framing: Period gold leaf molded frame with a linen oval liner.
